Battery Storage Consultancy

Battery storage creates value. But only if the numbers actually stack up.

Vendor-neutral BESS feasibility for commercial and public sector organisations — covering peak shaving, solar optimisation, resilience, microgrid integration, and investment-grade business cases built on your actual data.

Independent BESS advice

Battery storage is worth pursuing for some organisations. Not all of them.

Battery storage has genuine value — but it depends entirely on your demand profile, tariff structure, grid connection, operational patterns, and what you're trying to achieve. The same system that delivers a strong return on one site may be marginal or negative on another.

Too many BESS assessments are produced by parties with a financial interest in the outcome — installers, battery suppliers, or energy companies offering behind-the-meter storage products. The modelling reflects what they want to sell, not necessarily what works for your site.

Renmaker's BESS feasibility work starts with your half-hourly consumption data and your actual tariff structure. We model realistic scenarios, stress-test the assumptions, and tell you honestly whether the numbers work — and if they don't, why not. If storage doesn't stack up on its own but does as part of a solar-plus-storage or microgrid configuration, we'll show you that comparison too.

When BESS typically delivers strong returns

  • Sites with high, spiky demand profiles and significant demand charge exposure
  • Sites with existing or planned solar where self-consumption rates are low
  • Sites with time-of-use tariffs where the peak-to-off-peak spread is large
  • Sites where grid capacity constraints make network upgrade costs prohibitive
  • Sites where operational continuity during outages has a quantifiable financial value
  • Sites where grid flexibility revenue (FFR, DC, BM) is accessible and material

We are not affiliated with any battery manufacturer, technology platform, or installer. Our assessment is based on your data and independent modelling — not on moving a particular product.

What the assessment covers

A thorough analysis before you commit capital.

BESS feasibility is not just battery sizing. The value case depends on how the system operates, what tariff and grid structures it interacts with, and whether the controls and integration architecture will actually deliver the modelled performance.

Demand profiling & tariff analysis

We analyse your half-hourly consumption data and current tariff structure to establish the actual demand pattern the battery would operate against. Generic assumptions — average loads, typical demand charges — are replaced with your real numbers. This is where most assessments go wrong and where ours starts.

Battery sizing & technology assessment

We model different battery sizes and operating strategies against your demand profile to find the configuration that delivers the best return for your specific situation. We also assess technology options — lithium-ion chemistries, flow batteries where relevant — and their implications for cycle life, warranty, and long-term performance.

Solar integration modelling

For sites with existing or planned solar, we model the combined solar-plus-storage system — optimising battery dispatch to maximise self-consumption, minimise export at low rates, and balance demand charge reduction against solar curtailment. The integrated case is often materially different from standalone BESS or standalone solar assessments.

Resilience & islanding assessment

Where operational continuity matters, we assess the additional battery capacity and controls architecture needed to support islanded operation during a grid outage — identifying critical loads, minimum backup duration requirements, and the cost of resilience as a separate, quantifiable value driver.

Investment case & financial modelling

We build the full investment case: capital cost, installation, connection, ongoing maintenance, battery replacement cycle, and all revenue and saving streams — demand charge reduction, export revenue, grid flexibility, solar self-consumption uplift. IRR, NPV, payback, and sensitivity tables across energy price, usage, and technology cost scenarios.

Procurement support

We prepare procurement specifications and evaluation criteria, support supplier shortlisting, and review technical and commercial proposals on your behalf — checking that proposed systems match the assessed requirement and that performance guarantees are structured appropriately.

The deliverables

What you receive at the end of the assessment.

01

Demand & tariff analysis report

Your consumption profile, peak demand patterns, tariff structure analysis, and grid connection assessment.

02

BESS sizing options

Two to three sizing scenarios with operating strategy, technology recommendation, and performance assumptions for each.

03

Financial model

Full investment case with IRR, NPV, payback, and sensitivity analysis across key variables. Assumptions documented explicitly.

04

Resilience assessment

Critical load analysis, minimum backup requirements, and the cost and architecture implications of islanded operation if required.

05

Hardware security review

Assessment of BMS and monitoring hardware data routing behaviour and recommendations for procurement criteria.

06

Procurement specification

Technical requirements document suitable for market testing or formal procurement, including performance guarantee framework.

Hardware security

Battery management systems from certain manufacturers route operational data overseas by default.

BMS and monitoring platforms from a number of major battery manufacturers — particularly those produced in China — are configured to send operational data to overseas servers as a default. For most commercial sites this is a manageable consideration. For healthcare, government, defence supply chain, data centres, and other security-conscious organisations it is a procurement issue that needs to be addressed before specification.

We review the data routing behaviour of specified hardware as a standard part of every BESS assessment, and can advise on network architecture and contractual controls where data sovereignty is a requirement. Read more about our critical and secure facilities advisory.
